Water Testing and Trading

Quick Answer

Test water before buying or selling it, treat the contaminants that remain, and retest the finished batch. Match its measured grade to the buyer or production job instead of trusting the label or appearance.

Water in Probably Stolen is a product with a measured grade, a contamination profile, and a label that may be wrong. Test the contents before valuing a purchase, select treatment that addresses the contaminants actually present, and check the finished batch before putting it on sale. Cleaner water is not automatically the correct stock for every buyer or production job.

For a practical starting loop, keep a testing tool, an owned container, and appropriate treatment supplies together. A Water Pitcher and filter can handle useful early processing, while the dedicated Water Purifier provides overnight treatment. The handheld HydraTech Micro Water Purifier is a separate device. Understanding those distinctions prevents you from buying equipment for a job it cannot perform.

Read the water instead of trusting its label

A label describes what somebody claims is inside the container. It does not establish the liquid's actual grade. Water Testing Strips and the AquaScan let you check the contents; use that result when deciding whether the asking price makes sense.

Take an individual unused strip from the testing kit and apply it to the water container. The jar that holds the strips is the supply container. Trying to use that entire jar as though it were the testing tool misses the interaction. A used strip is consumed, so count the remaining supply when deciding how many uncertain purchases you can inspect.

The AquaScan gives a more useful breakdown for treatment decisions. Besides the actual grade and declared label, it identifies contamination types. A low reading caused by microbes asks for a different response from a batch carrying heavy metals. The overall percentage tells you how much improvement is needed; the contaminant list tells you which treatment deserves your attention.

You can inspect a working container and check it again as its contents change. Keep track of which container holds the tested liquid, especially when several similar bottles sit on the counter. A remembered reading is only useful if it still belongs to the batch you are about to buy, process, or sell.

AquaScan

Use a reading rather than the declared label.

Understand the six grades

The water grades divide liquid into practical quality categories. Use the category together with its measured purity rather than judging the liquid by its appearance.

GradePurity rangePractical meaning
GutterflowBelow 90%Heavily contaminated starting material
Rustwater90% to 96%Contaminated water that needs treatment
Ghostwater96% to 98%Water that may look cleaner than it is
Basewater98% to 99%A standard lower-level water product
High-Quality Water99% to 99.9%Cleaner stock for drinking and cooking requests
Pure Water99.9% or higherPremium water for demanding uses

The category displayed by the game is particularly useful at a boundary. Do not round a nearly sufficient percentage up in your head and sell it as the next grade. Use the tested category, then set the label accordingly.

Ghostwater deserves extra attention because looking clean is part of the trap. It can resemble Basewater while falling short of the required grade. A buyer asking for Basewater is asking for the measured product, so a visually convincing bottle is still the wrong offer if its test says otherwise.

Match treatment to the remaining contamination

Treatment tools have different roles. Applying more of a tool that targets the wrong problem can spend supplies without producing the grade you need. Start with the test, choose the relevant tool, and retest after the operation.

Water Purification Tablets remove most microbial contaminants and some chemicals. They are useful for initial treatment, particularly with Rustwater. They do not replace every other purification method. If a tablet improves the reading but leaves another contamination type behind, use that remaining result to plan the next step.

A Water Filter works inside a Water Pitcher as water is poured through it. It can remove contaminants such as microplastics and organic waste, but its durability limits how much work it can do. Very dirty input can consume that durability quickly. Check the filter rather than assuming a pitcher continues processing equally well indefinitely.

The UV Lamp targets bacteria and other microorganisms. It is a useful answer to a microbial problem, but it does not establish that every impurity in a mixed batch is gone. A cleaner microbial reading and a satisfactory overall grade are separate things to verify.

Hydroreed provides gradual purification, but its limit means it cannot independently carry a batch to Basewater. Treat it as a limited method rather than a substitute for equipment needed to reach higher grades. Kotton Fabric is also not a replacement for a proper water filter; its material is too coarse for that role.

Choose between the handheld device and the machine

The HydraTech Micro Water Purifier works on a container and can raise its contents to Basewater quality. It spends durability as it processes water. That makes its remaining condition relevant to the quantity you plan to clean, even when the target grade is modest.

The dedicated Water Purifier is an overnight machine. Its interface accepts power, a water container, and equipment modules. It can keep improving water toward the maximum allowed by its installed Quality modules, which is a different role from the handheld device's Basewater treatment.

The machine's three module effects solve three different problems:

  • Efficiency reduces energy consumption.
  • Performance increases the amount of contamination removed during a night.
  • Quality raises the maximum purity the machine can achieve.

If processing is too slow, Performance is the relevant category to examine. If processing has reached a ceiling below your intended grade, Quality is the category that changes that ceiling. Confusing those problems can lead you to buy an upgrade that works correctly but does not fix the issue you actually have.

Water Pitcher

The pitcher holds the filter used during treatment.

Build a repeatable trading loop

Unlocking Water Trading through Wild's Network supplies a starter kit and brings a Water Trader into the shop's customer flow. The kit includes testing and purification supplies, a pitcher, a filter, a sign, and a partially used handheld purifier. The larger Water Purifier machine is acquired separately.

Use the starter supplies to understand a complete batch before expanding. Buy or obtain water, test it, process it through the appropriate tools, and test the result. Only then decide whether the finished product should be sold or reserved for another use. That order keeps an uncertain incoming label from becoming an uncertain outgoing label.

Separate stock by tested grade. This need not become a complicated inventory system: the important point is to avoid pouring finished water back into an untested working batch or forgetting which pitcher still needs treatment. Keeping one working container and a clearly identified finished container makes the status easier to follow.

Before each transaction, check what the buyer wants. Some customers request a specific grade and refuse water that does not meet that request. Producing an impressive quantity is less useful than having an eligible product available when the request arrives.

Decide when more purification is useful

A Water Purifier without Quality upgrades reaches a lower ceiling than a machine configured for Pure Water. The tooltip's Max Purity value tells you the limit for the current setup. Compare that number with the grade you need before spending additional nights waiting.

The Contaminant Removed (Last Night) reading shows whether the machine made progress during its previous cycle. Positive removal means the batch is still being processed. A finished batch at the machine's limit needs a different decision: keep it at that grade, or improve the equipment if a higher grade is required.

High-purity finishing can take longer than the first improvements to dirty water. Do not interpret that slowdown alone as proof that the machine is broken. Read the current purity, the maximum, and the last cycle's removal together. Those values describe the actual bottleneck much better than the number of nights that have passed.

At the same time, avoid treating 100% as the purpose of every batch. Basewater and High-Quality Water remain useful stock. Wine production also depends on suitable water, and its mineral requirements make maximum purification an unsuitable automatic rule for that separate activity.

Keep the sale label aligned with the finished batch

After filtration, UV treatment, mixing, or overnight processing, test again. None of those operations should be followed by a sale based entirely on the liquid's old identity. The result you have now is the product you are offering.

Set the label to match the tested grade. Changing a label does not clean the contents. Buyers can check water themselves, so a high-grade label on an inferior batch creates a discrepancy rather than a legitimate premium product.

If an incoming seller's description genuinely conflicts with a test, use the game's challenge interaction during negotiation. The useful habit is to identify an actual mismatch. Accusing every visitor, or relying on the appearance of the water without a reading, does not replace appraisal.

When a customer ignores a pitcher, inspect both sides of the transaction: the liquid's actual grade and the customer's request. Do not immediately discard the container or buy another purifier. A batch can be successfully purified yet still fail to match the product that this particular customer wants.

Water Testing Strip

Use an unused individual strip to test the finished batch.

This sequence keeps each purchase tied to an observed problem. First establish what the water is, then establish what needs to change, and finally choose equipment that can make that change. Repeat the test on the finished batch so the next decision starts from the liquid you actually have.
