The Butcher: Arrest and Revenge

Quick Answer

Reporting the Butcher claims his wanted bounty but begins a later revenge storyline. After the graffiti, cleaver and threatening note, Sawyer can offer a paid Butcher Hunting Service.

Reporting the Butcher claims his wanted bounty but begins a later revenge storyline. After the graffiti, cleaver and threatening note, Sawyer can offer a paid Butcher Hunting Service. Enable that service through Nightly Services and check the next Nightly Report to confirm it has been carried out.

If you are already blocked from going outside, owning a firearm in shop storage is not enough. Put a suitable gun in your carried bag; the relevant requirement is a class two or higher metal firearm rather than a basic printed .22. You can also remain in the shop while waiting for Sawyer's route instead of trying to resolve the threat by leaving immediately.

Identify the wanted meat seller

The Butcher is a Lower Levels visitor who sells meat and scavenged goods. Compare him with the Security Wanted List while he is still at the counter. His ordinary appearance includes a red cap and bloodstained apron, but the wanted entry is the relevant identity check before you call Security.

The earliest listed arrival is day fourteen, or day five with Skip Intro. That is an earliest opportunity, not a promise that he stands at the counter on that precise day in every run. If you miss him or let him leave, he can return on a weekly cycle while unreported.

Confirm the wanted identity before reporting.

The base bounty is 450 Credits. Perks that change wanted rewards can affect what you actually receive, so do not treat the reference amount as an independent guarantee across every starting setup. The choice also changes more than your immediate cash balance: reporting him ends the recurring trade branch and brings later consequences.

There is no need to connect his first appearance with another character's disappearance. He has his own encounter sequence. The presence of scavenged goods in his stock does not make every scavenger in the game part of that sequence.

Decide whether to trade before reporting

On the first visit, buying his entire stock offers a twenty-five-percent wholesale discount. That stock includes a Small Satchel, Crowbar, one standard Raw Meat, two small Raw Meat items and Animal Fat. The satchel contains scavenger belongings, including a token and journal entry, alongside ordinary goods.

If you let him remain a vendor, later visits bring more meat with a twenty-percent wholesale discount, and those deliveries carry stolen heat. This can make him useful as a recurring supplier, but the item status still matters when you decide what to keep in the shop.

Buying from him does not automatically prevent you from reporting him during that same visit. You can complete a purchase and call Security while he remains at the window. Make the choice before dismissing him; once he has gone, the counter encounter is over.

The tradeoff is therefore not simply a bounty versus nothing. Continuing to serve him preserves future meat deliveries. Reporting him gives the immediate reward and opens the revenge branch, which can later require spending credits to resolve. If your cash is tight, include that later expense in the decision rather than regarding the full bounty as permanently spare money.

Call Security while he is present

Use the wanted identity check first, then operate the teal Call Security control under the counter. Press and hold it while the Butcher is still there. On the first use, a warning can appear before the actual call; respond to that state rather than assuming the initial interaction always dispatches officers immediately.

  1. Confirm the visitor against the Security Wanted List.
  2. Finish any purchase you intend to make while he is at the window.
  3. Press and hold Call Security.
  4. Complete the call if the first interaction only displays its warning.
  5. Wait for the arrest and reward before treating the report as complete.

Do not mistake his arrest for the permanent end of his story. His threats during the encounter foreshadow the later branch. Normal trading can continue between those events, so a few uneventful days after the arrest do not mean the revenge sequence has been cancelled.

Reporting also affects faction relationships. There is no universal rule that a wanted character's removal must improve how everyone views you. For this decision, rely on the change displayed in your run rather than assuming the Lower Levels necessarily reward cooperation with Security.

Recognize the revenge events in order

The revenge route is spaced across later days. First, blood graffiti reading MEAT appears on the storefront. After that, a Meat Cleaver and threatening note arrive at the counter. The note makes the danger of leaving the shop explicit.

These are separate milestones. Cleaning the graffiti improves the immediate condition of the shop but does not settle the conflict. Likewise, taking the cleaver out of the way does not count as paying someone to stop the Butcher.

Meat Cleaver

The cleaver and note precede the hunting-service offer.

Enable Janitorial Service through the overnight service controls if you want the graffiti cleaned. Check the Nightly Report afterward to see whether that cleanup happened. Keep the cleanup result distinct from a report that the Butcher himself has been dealt with; they describe different jobs.

The cleaver is also a usable animal-butchering item. Its practical inventory use does not turn it into a quest key that you must brandish at the Butcher or deliver to another customer. Keep your focus on the note's threat and the later service offer.

Exact calendar dates can vary with when you first report him. Follow the event sequence instead of waiting for a single universal day number. An arrest that happens later in your run naturally pushes the subsequent stages later as well.

Pass the firearm check before an excursion

When the hunt is active, the game can tell you that you must bring a gun before leaving. The important distinctions are where the firearm is stored and what kind it is. A weapon elsewhere in the shop does not satisfy a carried-equipment requirement.

Place a class two or higher metal gun in your bag before attempting the excursion again. A basic .22 printed pistol is not the equivalent item for this check. Moving the same unsuitable pistol between different shop containers does not address the weapon-class issue.

Use the following order if you still see the message:

  • Confirm the item is a firearm, rather than a melee tool such as the cleaver.
  • Check that it meets the required class instead of choosing by price alone.
  • Put it in the bag you are taking outside.
  • Recheck the excursion option after making that change.

The requirement is not an instruction to equip a weapon through a nonexistent separate character slot. The bag is the relevant location. Equally, having many guns in storage is not stronger evidence than having one suitable firearm in the correct carried inventory.

Do not interpret passing the check as a promise of a particular combat result. It permits the relevant departure condition; it is not the same thing as hiring Sawyer or receiving the service-completion report. If your goal is the paid resolution, staying inside and maintaining the business remains an available approach while that route develops.

Wait for Sawyer's hunting offer

Sawyer's Butcher Hunting offer belongs after the cleaver and note stage. It is not expected to appear immediately after the first arrest. If all you have seen is the graffiti, continue through the encounter sequence before deciding the service is missing.

Once Sawyer visits and explains the offer, you still have to activate it. His conversation unlocks access; it does not automatically spend the fee or complete the overnight job. This distinction is easy to miss when the dialogue sounds like an agreement to help.

The base service cost is 500 Credits. That already exceeds the 450-Credit base bounty by fifty Credits, before any separate cleanup cost. The calculation does not make either branch universally better, but it prevents a mistaken budget in which reporting the Butcher is treated as pure profit with no later cost.

Sawyer's offer is tied to this storyline rather than a requirement to select Friend of the Janitors or Damaged Leg at character creation. You should not restart a run solely because you did not choose those perks. First verify that the story reached the threat stage and that Sawyer actually made the offer.

Activate Butcher Hunting through the bedroll

At the end of the business day, open Nightly Services through the bedroll. Select Butcher Hunting Service and make sure you have the required credits. The ordinary Janitorial Service and Joe Wild's regular upgrades are different controls.

His offer unlocks the paid service; enable it through Nightly Services.

The completion sequence is:

  1. Reach the cleaver and threatening note event.
  2. Receive Sawyer's offer during a later visit.
  3. Open the overnight service list at the bedroll.
  4. Enable the named Butcher Hunting Service.
  5. Sleep and read the following Nightly Report.

The report is your confirmation that the paid action was carried out. Merely seeing the offer, having the fee in reserve, or cleaning the storefront does not establish that the hunt has ended. After completion, the special hunting service disappears and the threat no longer restricts ordinary nighttime activity in the same way.

No extra bounty or special reward item needs to be collected for hiring the crew. The result you purchased is the resolution of the threat. That is the endpoint to look for when deciding whether the storyline is complete.

Keep other character stories separate

The satchel's journal and token belong to another scavenger, not proof that the Butcher killed Eleanor. Her food request and Care Package decisions remain a separate story. You do not need to complete the Butcher's revenge route to make those choices.

There is likewise no established reason to interpret his meat stock as confirmation of Georgio's fate. A dark implication in one encounter cannot substitute for another character's actual dialogue. Follow the wanted seller, arrest, vandalism, threat and hunting-service sequence as its own chain, and the next required action stays clear.
