Rats Starving With a Feed Dispenser

Quick Answer

A Livestock Feed Dispenser does not turn unprocessed food into available calories automatically unless Auto Blend is enabled.

A Livestock Feed Dispenser does not turn unprocessed food into available calories automatically unless Auto Blend is enabled. Load suitable food and press Blend, or turn on Auto Blend before the overnight cycle. Also confirm the dispenser belongs to the rats' cage: simply owning one elsewhere in the shop does not feed that colony.

Check the food type as well as the total. Rats never draw from fish-feed calories, and Peat works for rats through the dispenser rather than as loose food. The device needs no power and accepts no modules, so buying a battery or a generic upgrade is not the fix for an empty or incompatible calorie reserve.

Check the stored-calorie reading first

Open the dispenser and inspect what it has stored. Food objects waiting in its storage and calories already prepared for feeding are different states. A drawer full of ingredients can look reassuring while the usable reserve is still empty.

The dispenser has a six by four storage area and can hold up to forty thousand kilocalories. Blend converts its contents into calories. The maximum is a storage capacity, not an amount the machine creates merely by existing in the cage.

Livestock Feed Dispenser

Loaded food is not available feed until it has been blended.

Before sleeping, compare the reserve with the colony you actually have. New litters and growing animals can change demand even when you have not bought additional rats. A feeding plan that worked for a smaller group may no longer provide the same margin.

Do not use the value of food in credits as a substitute for calories. An expensive item is not necessarily the one that provides the most feeding capacity, and an object categorized as a consumable can still be unsuitable for this dispenser's task.

Convert loaded food with Blend

Put suitable food into the dispenser and press Blend. Watch the calorie reading change so you know the conversion happened. This is the immediate check that separates a loaded machine from one with prepared feed.

The machine can blend food, animals and fish. Animals are butchered first and fish are filleted before their food value is stored. That means blending is a processing action, not a harmless way to park valuable breeding stock temporarily.

  1. Open the dispenser in the cage you want to feed.
  2. Inspect the items currently inside its storage.
  3. Remove anything you do not intend to convert into calories.
  4. Add suitable food for the rats.
  5. Press Blend.
  6. Confirm the new stored reserve before ending the day.

If you have been repeatedly adding food without pressing Blend, inspect this state before concluding that feeding is broken. The device's storage interface and its calorie output are connected by that processing action.

Likewise, if you put a live animal inside by accident, remove it before blending. The dispenser is capable of turning that animal into food; it does not know that you intended to keep it as part of the colony.

Turn on Auto Blend only when you want nightly processing

Auto Blend is off by default. Turning it on makes the dispenser convert loaded items each night. Leaving it off means you should prepare calories manually rather than assuming tomorrow's feeding will process the contents for you.

This setting is useful when you routinely add the same safe food types. It is less suitable as a substitute for inspecting a mixed storage drawer that may contain animals or other items you want to retain.

A good diagnostic is to inspect both the setting and the reserve. If Auto Blend is off and the reserve is empty, the problem is clear even if food remains visibly loaded. If Auto Blend is on but the reserve is still unsuitable for rats, move to food compatibility instead of toggling the same switch repeatedly.

Do not press Empty while trying to start feeding. Empty clears the stored calories. It is a different control from Blend, and using it can remove the reserve you intended to preserve for the night.

Check that the dispenser serves the correct cage

The Livestock Feed Dispenser feeds the animals of the cage or tank to which it belongs. Put it in the Animal Cage's equipment arrangement rather than leaving it as an unrelated machine in main inventory.

Animal Cage

Check the dispenser serving the cage that contains the starving rats.

If you have more than one cage, inspect each colony separately. A full dispenser serving one cage does not establish that another group of rats has food. This matters after reorganizing animals, separating breeders or moving new litters into another container.

The Ranching upgrade and Rat Wrangler start include a dispenser already in the cage's slot. That starting arrangement can make the relationship easy to overlook when you later buy another machine or cage. A second dispenser still needs to be associated with the animals it is supposed to feed.

When investigating a failure, identify the starving rats first, open their actual cage, and follow the feeding setup from there. Starting at any dispenser you happen to see in the shop can lead you to inspect a perfectly stocked machine that serves the wrong animals.

Remove fish-only feed from the rat calculation

Gutterflow Pellets provide four thousand kilocalories and Industrial Fish Feed provides five thousand, but both are fish-only feed. Rats never draw from those reserves. A large number associated with fish feed therefore does not demonstrate that your rats have a usable meal.

The dispenser keeps rat meat, other meat, other food and the fish feeds separately. An animal draws from the compatible stored categories in proportion to what is available. It is not a single unrestricted pool that every animal species can consume interchangeably.

Food or storage stateRelevance to starving rats
Suitable ordinary food with caloriesCan supply a usable feeding reserve
Peat blended into the dispenserUsable for rats through this route
Peat left loose as a food substituteDoes not provide the same rat-feeding route
Gutterflow PelletsFish feed, not rat feed
Industrial Fish FeedFish feed, not rat feed
Food loaded but not blendedInspect processing before assuming calories are available
Empty calorie reserveRestock and process suitable food

Use food compatibility to interpret the reading. If the device is full of the wrong feed, adding another fish-feed item only increases the wrong reserve. Change the food type rather than buying another dispenser to repeat the same mistake.

Read the feeding slider correctly

The slider controls how full each animal's hunger is filled. Its default is eighty-five percent. It is a target for the animals' hunger, not a statement that eighty-five percent of all food items are automatically blended.

A lower target can leave the animals less well fed even when calories remain in storage. Inspect the actual setting if you changed it while experimenting with food costs. Do not assume the machine is malfunctioning because it follows a target you previously reduced.

At the same time, a generous slider cannot create feed from nothing. Turning the target up does not help if the reserve is empty, the food is incompatible, or the dispenser is serving a different cage. Check those conditions before treating the setting as the only cause.

For a first repair, restore an intentional feeding target and supply appropriate calories, then inspect the animals after the next cycle. Make one meaningful correction at a time so you can see whether the problem was conversion, compatibility, placement or the target itself.

Keep rat meat out of the colony's feed

Rat meat is not a safe way to close the feeding loop for the same colony. Feeding rats their own species' meat risks Prion Disease, which harms immunity, growth and longevity. Turning it into dispenser calories does not establish a safe exemption from that concern.

Nutrifruit

Use compatible food with calories and keep rat meat out of the reserve.

Keep harvested rat meat separate from food intended for the dispenser. If the drawer contains a mixture, review it before pressing Blend or enabling Auto Blend. Automation is useful only when the inputs are the ones you want processed.

This is a different problem from literal starvation. A colony can have calories available and still suffer from the consequences of an unsuitable food source. Do not interpret every sick or poorly growing rat as proof that the dispenser is empty.

Likewise, treating the animals with a serum does not replace feeding them. A health-related item and a calorie reserve serve different purposes. Repair the feeding setup first when the visible problem is hunger, then address other conditions using their own indicators.

Distinguish hunger from other cage problems

Overcrowding, dirty housing and cage wear can harm a colony even when food is being supplied. If the calorie reserve and feeding target look correct, inspect the rats' hunger alongside their health and the cage's condition.

A growing colony needs more than a full dispenser. Animals can occupy more space as they grow, and additional litters increase both upkeep and the number of mouths to feed. Do not solve a short reserve by continuing to expand the colony without a plan to restock it.

If a rat is outside the cage after an escape, inspect that animal's current location rather than assuming the cage's dispenser still answers its feeding problem. Reorganizing stock can make it easy to miss a stray animal among ordinary shop items.

The focused repair is to verify the relevant cage, prepare compatible calories, set the intended hunger target and confirm the result after the overnight cycle. Batteries and modules are not needed for the dispenser itself. Once those feeding conditions are correct, any remaining disease, crowding or housing issue should be diagnosed separately rather than blamed on the same empty-food symptom.
